Basics: How to load and dump textures (by heRosSHaDE)
This tutorial was written by heRosSHaDE and originally posted on the forums. I made some changes to make it more up to date. - mode7
I wanted to be useful on this site, and I made this a long time ago, so I decided to recycle it.
This is for people that really have no idea on what to do.
Loading the textures
Step 1
First you need an emulator I'd recommend 1964 or Project64
Then you should download the setup for rice's video , which can be found on this site
You could also use Glide64 which is alo a great plugin with advanced featurres like widesceen , texture compression and much faster texture loading.
No matter which of the two you are using you need to put the plugins in the "plugins" folder of your emulator's directory. With the newest version of Aristotele Mudlord you might need to put some files in the emulator directory directly, but you wil see this when opening the zip file.
Step 2
Once you have it installed, change your video plugin to Rice in the emulator's plugins configuration.
Step 3
Then go to the Video Settings, choose the texture enhancement tab and check off the load hi-res texture if available check box. Also check "Full TMEM Emulation" if it isn't checked yet. You're halfdone!
Step 4
Now lets say that you downloaded one of the retexture packs. First you would open the archive file, then you have a whole bunch of these random pictures with weird names. Well, these are the textures from the game, the name is what the plugin looks for to replace the texture.
Step 5
So now that you have extracted them, you have to make a folder for it , as for a MM retexture would be ZELDA MAJORA'S MASK, or a Oot retexture would be THE LEGEND OF ZELDA, or A Super Mario 64 retexture would be SUPER MARIO 64. Note that the folders name has to be the same name as it says on the window caption, like if you were playing super smash bros the folder name and the window caption would = SMASH BROTHERS. After you make the folder, just copy the textures in there , and copy this folder to Plugin > hires texture> corresponding game.
If you have trouble finding the right game name for the folder you can also right-click on the rom and select Rom Infomation.... You will find the correct name under "Rom Internal Name"
Dumping the textures
Now that you have seen how much fun it is, and would like to take a crack at making your own textures, you have to dump the textures. It is just basically taking the textures as they are in use in the game and just saving them outside the game. To dump textures, just go Options>graphical Settings>texture enhancement tab> then check the dump textures to files box. The folder will just make itself and the folder is in Plugin >texture_dump> corresponding game.
Tips when retexturing
-Interact with everything you can find, this is how you can dump textures that you haven't dumped yet.
-Yes you do have to play out the whole game to get all the textures, unless someone has already done a compelete pack of the game that you are retexturing, then you can use their pack (For example Dipji's Oot cell shaded pack).
-Do NOT use ms paint, it doesn't support transparency and just is not fit for proper retextures. I would suggest Paint.net or The Gimp or another free program if you can't get Photoshop (which I would recommend getting).
-Do not use someones textures and call it your own, give them credit. Lets just say, if you don't, your bound to get flamed or ripped apart.
